World Diabetes Day

This day serves as a reminder of the impact diabetes has across all ages and life stages. From childhood through the reproductive years, working age, and into older adulthood, diabetes affects millions of lives. Itโ€™s a condition that knows no boundaries and touches families, friends, and communities.

Key Messages

  • Diabetes can affect people at every stage of life;

  • From childhood to older age, diabetes prevention and care efforts must be integrated across life stages; and

  • Supporting well-being and self-care empowers people with diabetes at every age.

Diabetes Prevalence In Goa

Goa has one of the highest diabetes prevalences in India at about 26.4% of its population.

The estimated proportion with prediabetes in Goa stands at around 20.3%

Data from government sources show ~9,698 new diabetes cases in Goa during April 2022โ€“March 2023 โ€” roughly 25 new cases per day.

Why this is alarming

  • With more than a quarter of the population affected, the burden of diabetes in Goa is well above the national average, so the need for vigilance is high.

  • The combination of high prevalence, rising new cases and a sizeable pre-diabetic population means thereโ€™s a risk of more people progressing to full diabetes unless preventive action is scaled up.

  • Diabetes also links to complications (heart disease, kidney disease, eye damage) so the healthcare system will face increased demands if the trend continues unchecked

The Importance of a Life-Course Approach

Adopting a life-course approach to health means that diabetes prevention and management should be relevant to individuals at every stage of life. From education about healthy eating and lifestyle choices during childhood to support systems for managing diabetes during the working years, addressing diabetes as a life-long journey is vital. By focusing on self-management and providing tools for individuals to take control of their health, we can significantly improve overall well-being.

In conclusion, remember that diabetes can affect anyone, at any stage. Itโ€™s essential that we create environments that support those living with diabetes. By focusing on education, prevention, and management across life stages, we can help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy, fulfilling life. Happy World Diabetes Day to all!
